POH Community Service Program
This fall, we will be embarking on the 39th year of the annual Fullerton Council of PTA’s community service project. Through the Pathways of Hope Holiday Program, food and holiday gifts are distributed to over 500 Fullerton families, thereby serving over 3,000 children from the Fullerton School District. Families served by the POH Holiday Community Program are designated by their schools as being low income and in need during this particular holiday season.
As background, for many years our PTA Council supported the Christmas Clearing Bureau sponsored by the Volunteer Center of North Orange County. Thirty + years ago it was decided that the Clearing Bureau could no longer be funded. Since the PTA was still interested in helping with a community service project for the holidays, Caroline Peterson met with F.I.E.S. representatives to see how we might work together.
What developed is known today as the Pathways of Hope Holiday Community Program. It is truly a collaborative effort joining together the PTA units of the Fullerton Council, the Fullerton School District, the Assistance League of Fullerton, the Orange County Toy Collaborative (Toys For Tots and Spark of Love), the Salvation Army, and various community groups and churches.
Working in conjunction with these varying entities, the PTA units of the Fullerton Council help by contributing donations of toys/gifts, books and non-perishable food items, as well as, volunteer hours at the POH. Distribution Center. This community service project has evolved over the years and procedures have been developed to help meet a special need in our own community.
